Thus begins the VEEP showdown: Michigan Edition

    By Nick, Section News

Might just be Mitt Romney.  That's the word out of the Detroit News this morning as they do their best to analyze the tea leaves surrounding a GOP Vice Presidential candidate announcement that some in the MSM have speculated could come soon.  Very soon.  While the Obaminator is overseas, actually.

On the timing discussion I can't state firmly enough how much I hope they're wrong.  Huge mistake to make that kind of announcement this early.  Let Obama bask in the glow of rave European reviews.  The man just drew three times as many people in Berlin as he's ever been able to draw stateside, and when he was here at home he was little more than the opening act to a free concert by a world-famous rock band.  He'd have had to throw in free beer to get half the number he drew over on "the continent."

Making a VEEP announcement, one of the few giant, potentially race altering moves in either campaigns' arsenal, this far out from the convention wouldn't just leave Obama with the bigger guns left to fire, it would smack of desperation.  Approach this like a baseball game, guys.  Saunter up to the plate.  Hold the bat loosely in your hands.  Don't press.  Let the game come to you.  You can't hit a six run homerun.  Scratch singles will do it.

But that doesn't mean we can't start speculating on who that final VP choice might be.  The buzz in the press the last couple of days centers around Bobby Jindal (he says he's OUT), Minnesota Governor Tim Pawlenty and Michigan's native son Mitt Romney.

    Read on...

    The News claims:

Romney's perceived strength on economic issues, his fundraising prowess and his January win in the state's primary have him at or near the top of the pundits' lists.

"He is one of the few vice presidential candidates who actually brings some geography to the table," said (MRP Chair Saul) Anuzis, who was neutral during the primary but has strong ties to many in Romney's Michigan organization.

Romney, a former Massachusetts governor, would help not only in Michigan, Anuzis said, but also in swing states such as Nevada, where many voters share Romney's Mormon faith.

I like Mitt Romney.  Back during the 2006 gubernatorial campaign he, McCain and Rudy Giulliani all made swings through Michigan to back Dick DeVos and to lay a little pavement for their own efforts in-state this cycle.  Romney actually made several.  He hit Coneys and other restaurants with us.  He spent a full day on the bus.  Did a fundraiser.  Spent a few hours at bowling alleys.  Met with dozens of Michigan's working moms and dads on the job.  You name it.  Michigan was the centerpiece of his campaign strategy and a primary state he ultimately carried.

Tim Pawlenty brings a little regional / geographical juice too.  Minnesota never goes GOP but in recent polling McCain is closer than he has any right to be and the way Al Franken is butchering the state's Senate race for local Dems the inclusion of their native son on the ticket could shift a couple handfuls of electoral votes there too.

He was also an early McCain backer and did some surrogate work for the Arizona Senator in January or February of 2007, keynoting the Kent County GOP Lincoln Day Dinner.

Both would be strong campaign choices and both have the experience (business, economic, community, executive, you name it) to be Vice President. Not to mention a proven track record of attracting independent and moderate Democrats in traditionally lefty states. Romney would certainly be the flashier pick locally.  Besides, then we could read more stories like the News article this morning about the need to heal the rift (circa 1998) among factions in the GOP.  Because that's practically yesterday and is much more important than the giant schism over RMGN happening at the Michigan Democrat Party circa, oh, today.

No matter how the decision ultimately shakes out, as long as the ball is in the air Michigan finds herself center stage again, with an opportunity to defy conventional wisdom and all the odds.  What looks nationally to be another good year for Democrats isn't shaking out so well locally.  We mentioned the RMGN wedge that has many prominent Dems calling for the heads of party leadership.  We've got campaign finance complaints.  Lawsuits.  A Congressional race over in the 9th District that isn't shaping up particularly well.

The Associated Press reports that Joe Knollenberg, the real one, not the giant paper headed imposter, is cleaning up on the fundraising circuit, running laps around the Democrats' dream candidate, yooooouuuuuuuuur Lottery Commissioner, Gary Peters.

Knollenberg reported Thursday that he had raised more than $731,000 during the past three months in his re-election bid, outpacing Peters, a former state lottery commissioner, who brought in $570,000 during the period.

Knollenberg, an eight-term incumbent from Bloomfield Township, ended the fundraising period with nearly $1.9 million in his campaign account. He has raised more than $2.5 million during the 2008 campaign cycle. Peters, also of Bloomfield Township, has $1.1 million in his account and has collected more than $1.3 million for the campaign.

Toss in a healthy dose (maybe not the best term in this instance) of Jack Kevorkian and this race isn't exactly what the Democrats bargained for.  Could we actually wind up looking back on this thing and saying with a straight face "that Gary Peters... he's no Nancy Skinner!"

Then there's the Democratic mayor in the biggest city in Michigan, physically attacking officers of the court.  A Democratic mayor, by the way, who other Democrats statewide refuse to either disavow or publicly condemn.  ("Boys will be boys.")

Oh, yeah, you didn't miss Hizzoner's latest felony, did you?  The Ivory Tower and every other rag in the state has it front and center this morning.  A court officer went to serve they Mayor's pal and top-thug Bobby Ferguson with papers demanding he appear in court.  One six foot four, 300 pound problem.  Kwame was in the house.

One source said the officers then heard someone shout, "Who the (expletive) is that?"

The mayor then charged out and shoved one of Worthy's officers backward into the other, the source said.

    The officers then left.

Probably a good call.  Leaving, I mean.  Frankly, they got off easy.  I mean, say you get to choose who attacks you... a menacing giant of a former football player with his iron grip-of-death or his thugged out best friend who's been convicted of pistol whipping employees among sundry other violent offenses?  They're lucky he didn't come out spraying his Tech-Nine all over the yard like he did back in 1990.  "Kill them, kill them," right Bobby?

I hope that man doesn't read this blog.  I might be in deep.

i agree that it would be bad timing on mccain's part to announce this week. as one commentator suggested this week, mccain has to stop reacting to obama news and create his own buzz.

romney makes sense for him in only one capacity: helping him try to deliver michigan (a key state). other than that, not so sure...

They can draw it out even longer.

frankly I LIKE the ongoing speculation of who it might be.  I hope it continues, and occasionally acting as though the decision is about to be made might divert the attention of the sometimes fickle press.

Obama is currently trying to demonstrate he has the "support of the world" and any attention by the press emboldens him further.  McCain needs to do whatever he can to receive even half the amount of coverage the "messiah" receives.

...first off, you never touch a cop (or sheriff's deputy) in Detroit. Sure-fire way to get your backside handed to you, toot sweet.

And don't let hizhonor's image fool you. If they wanted to, he'd be eating floor/wall/whatever part of the house was nearby.

Look no further to see who the mysterous person is quizzing the deputy regarding who's-who the Detroit's City Administration.

    I sense a pattern.

Surprisingly, once of the mayor's closest friends (and conviently the Judge assigned to hear his case), has had enough of the mayor's shenanagians and ordered him to post bond if he wants to avoid being a guest of the city lockup.

Large Crowds for BO? (none / 0) (#6)
by Bridget on Fri Jul 25, 2008 at 01:40:50 PM EST
    Hey Nick,

Just wanted to clarify that conservative blogs like Michelle Malkin are noting today that the reports of BO getting 200K people in Germany appear to be the MSM doing the usual soft padding on behalf of The Great Ones benefit. When you piece together early reports by local German news stations along with other on site reporters, the numbers were advised to be tens of thousands and late estimates were still being given as 20,000 Germans in attenance. It wasn't until other reporters came back on air after speaking with BO's handlers did the numbers start surging to 100K and then 200K by the time things were done.  Apparently, the police also agreed with BO's handlers numbers too.  Since when do these groups agree on numbers either?  What gives? Conservative critics have compared BO's group photo to those of Bush in recent years when Bush got 250K in attendance at speeches in Germany - many of which were protesting him. Those photos show many more participants than at BO's chat fest. Hmmm, what gives?  An honest miscount or someone trying to help BO look better than he really did???

Michelle Malkin and her sources nail the truth nearly every single time. We'll see what happens on this one.

Just thought I'd share this brieft news as all the rave reviews are the same reporters, news stations, editors and fans who inflate everything else for his benefit. They probably had a hand in this too. They'll do anything to get a liberal in office, anything. Even boast proudly when it comes to second grade math mistakes like basic counting. :-)

    Regards,

    Bridget

. . . anyone happen to know why Mike Huckabee isn't one of the 'frequently mentioned' in the McCain Veepstakes?  Seems to me like a guy who can clean up Slick Willy's Arkansas mess and make a decent showing in the GOP primaries ought to at least be on the short list.

Romney would be a HUGE mistake (none / 0) (#10)

    Go here to see why:

'The Case Against Mitt Romney' Collection

In one sentence, the case is:

Mitt Romney's constitutional subversion and poor economic stewardship while he was governor of Massachusetts; his risky and unvetted foreign, business, and political entanglements; and his conduct during the GOP primary campaign make him an objectively unfit and unacceptably risky vice-presidential pick for John McCain.

Alaska Governor Sarah Palin (none / 0) (#11)
by Victor Laszlo on Sat Jul 26, 2008 at 07:34:44 AM EST
Having two old white guys at the head of the GOP ticket in this election year is a recipe for failure.  McCain needs to make a bold and unorthodox choice for VP and that choice is Alaska Governor Sarah Palin who can out fish, out hunt, out shoot, out debate Barack Hussein Obama any day of the week.  Ironically, she can probably outplay Obama on the basketball court given that she led her high school team as a point guard to the state championship.  In short, Palin is the female version of Theodore Roosevelt and will fire up the GOP base and draw independents from an Obama campaign that is beginning to fade with the electorate.
