Dems abandoning RMGN ship amidst finance violations

I don't normally do naked link-drops.  In fact, I've never done a straight link-drop here on Right Michigan before.  Yeah, we try to highlight some of the original work being done by the Right Roots in-state every morning with our "In the Sphere" column but as far as mainstream media stories, if it's something that gets my blood pumping it's all I can do not to actually talk about it.

All of that said, the temptation is stronger than ever the way coverage of this Reform Michigan Government Now fiasco is redlining.  The discussion surrounding the extremists' takeover attempt is pervasive.  We've got stories that the "Black Caucus" in the state Legislature is calling for Mark Brewer's scalp (or a "divorce" as Bert Johnson puts it) since they believe the petition targets them disproportionately.

We've got the Governor and LG John Cherry admitting they helped finance the project last calendar year but their names never appear on any committee paperwork, indicating a serious and gross violation of Michigan campaign finance regulations.

We've got Rich Robinson at the Michigan Campaign Finance Network ignoring the blatant illegality (not that HE's in the tank for anyone here).

There's the complaint filed this week by the Michigan Chamber of Commerce officially pursuing the violations that the state's top campaign finance "watchdog" decided to ignore.

General dissatisfaction with the plan by legislative Democrats.

And we've even got the first official mention of a long-standing rumor surrounding possible House Democrat involvement in the drafting and endorsement of the petition.  Lansing insider publication MIRS mentions the buzz in generalities and doesn't drop the name that's been making it's way around the Capitol City for nearly a month.  I won't mention it either since I know the way the Lansing rumor mill works (it is usually accurate but impossible to source "on-the-record") but his initials are Andy Dillon.

There's Alma Wheeler Smith, a far-left Democrat extremist who we take to the mat frequently on this site (including this morning), telling Tim Skubick that she believes there was "no way" for signers to know what they were really signing and that "it was blindsiding the electorate."

And the hits just keep on coming.  So clear an hour and a half from your schedule today, open a can of Pepsi and put on your reading glasses... this is just some of the MSM coverage in the last twenty-four-ish hours of a story that broke first on RightMichigan.com.

Fate of the petition (none / 0) (#1)
by Shell on Thu Jul 24, 2008 at 09:36:50 AM EST
As the stink from RMGN keeps getting worse, I wonder if Brewer will withdraw the petitions or attempt to pull it before the identity of the biggest financial backers (if they're other than the DNC) are made public.  Someone is going to take the fall for this and the longer it's out there the more democrats will be "contaminated."

Can the petition be withdrawn at this point?

    Michigan Lawyers Weekly (none / 0) (#5)
by Victor Laszlo on Thu Jul 24, 2008 at 05:14:17 PM EST
The July 21 issue of the Michigan Lawyers Weekly is chock full of articles written by various attorneys (including an appellate attorney at Geoffrey Feiger's law firm) that just rips to shreds the Reform Michigan Government Now ballot proposal.  Dianne Byrum comes off looking like the female version of Sergeant Schultz from Hogan's Heroes in several of the articles.

    A take by a local candidate (none / 0) (#6)

Ken Yonker (candidate for the 72nd State House seat) has a post on his blog about RMGN, too.  Larger districts cut down on representation for minorities.  Like farmers.

    It would seem, then . . . (none / 0) (#7)

. . . that the MDP and AFL-CIO-CLC will ultimately be hoist on their own petard.

The fact that so many high-profile and not-so-high-profile Dems are disavowing this thing like the plague reminds me of the phenomenon of rats fleeing a sinking ship.  Those who seem to be willing to "die in place" have likely escalated their commitment to RMGN to the point that career suicide is less politically expensive than withdrawl.  (Not that I'm objecting, mind you; the fewer deformers we have meddling in the government the better.)

I prefer to think of coincidence as "anonymous divine intervention," and so find it darkly amusing not only that some knucklehead union drone inadvertently put the smoking gun where everyone could find it, but that it would in fact be found by a free-market intern doing background research into union financial disclosure.

But here's an idea, already floated by countless others . . . how about a Reform Michigan Labor Now (RMLN) initiative?  Any takers?
